Toshiba's passion for innovation goes back over 100 years ago; at a time of the industrial age when electricity was the new wonder. Japan was no longer closing its doors on the world and was welcoming the new industrial age with open arms. Two legendary men in Japanese Industry were to later merge their successful businesses that would make up Toshiba as we know it today. They were: Hisashige Tanaka and Ichisuke Fujioka.

In 1875 saw the establishment of Tanaka Seizo-sho (Tanaka Engineering Works), Japan's first manufacturer of telegraphic equipment. Its founder, Hisashige Tanaka (1799 - 1881), was well known from his youth for inventions which he continued to pursue until his death. His company went on to become the Shibaura Engineering Works. In 1899, the company was renamed Tokyo Denki (Tokyo Electric Co).

Ichisuke Fujioka, was known as the father of electricity in Japan. Ichisuke was born in 1857, the eldest son of a samurai. He started the Hakunetsu-sha company in 1890 Ichisuke also constructed an electric railway and introduced electric power to the entire nation His company was renamed Tokyo Electric and continued to flourish after his death in 1918.

Toshiba was founded by the merging of two companies in 1939. The merger in 1939 of Shibaura Seisakusho and Tokyo Denki created a new company called Tokyo Shibaura DenkiIt was soon nicknamed Toshiba, but it wasn't until 1984 that the company was officially renamed Toshiba Corporation.
