Founded in the late 19th century by Gerard Philips in the Netherlands, Philips is one of the biggest electronics companies in the world. It was in 1982 that Philips developed the Compact Disc in partnership with Sony. Philips also used to sell major household appliances under the name pf Philips. It sold the Major Domestic Appliance division to Whirlpool in 1991.

Philips was one of the few companies to successfully make the transition from the 19th century electrical world too the electronic world of today. Recent electronic products introduced by Philips are:
